What is a Digital Nomad?

Digital nomads are location-independent professionals who work remotely while traveling. Using modern information and communication technology (ICT), they can perform jobs without being tied to a specific office or country.

Common digital nomads include:

  • IT engineers

  • Web designers

  • Web consultants

💡 Tip: Many digital nomads live in one country for a few months and then move to another to continue their work. Japan’s new visa recognizes this lifestyle officially.

What is the Digital Nomad Visa?

Japan introduced the Digital Nomad Visa on March 31, 2024, under the “Designated Activities” category.

Key features:

  • Stay duration: up to 6 months (no extensions)

  • Allows remote work for foreign employers or clients outside Japan

  • Accompanying spouses and children are eligible under certain conditions

This visa is perfect for foreigners who want to experience living in Japan without working for a Japanese company.

Eligibility Requirements

✅ Must be working remotely for a foreign employer or clients outside Japan✅ Stay must not exceed 6 months✅ Must be a national of a visa waiver or tax treaty country✅ Must have annual income of 10 million yen or more✅ Must have insurance coverage for death, injury, or illness

For Spouse or Children:

Income Tax Considerations

Most eligible countries for the Digital Nomad Visa are tax treaty countries.

  • Stay under 6 months: Usually not subject to Japanese income tax

  • Future visa changes: If you extend your stay or switch to a long-term visa, income tax may apply

📌 Pro tip: Consult a tax advisor before your move to Japan to avoid surprises.
